Preparing for Audition Day

Before Your Audition

Please be sure to confirm your audition date with the Department of Music and make sure that copies of your letters of recommendation have been sent to the Department.  Questions may be addressed to

The Audition

Plan on arriving 15 to 30 minutes early on the day of your audition. The audition day begins with a welcome session that includes information about TCNJ and the Department of Music, as well as introduction to faculty and students. There will be time for questions at the conclusion of the welcome session. Please allow three hours to complete all audition day components.

There are three parts to every audition:

1.Aural Skills and Musicianship Placement
A one-on-one test of basic musicianship skills, including:
  • Reading notes, time and key signatures.
  • Singing an unaccompanied song.
  • Sight-singing.
  • Melodic and rhythmic memory.
A 10- to 15-minute performance for faculty in the corresponding instrumental or vocal area:
  • Brass
  • Percussion
  • Piano (Note: 20 to 30 minutes)
  • Strings
  • Voice
  • Woodwinds
3.InterviewCandidates for each of the degree programs (Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music in Music Education, and Bachelor of Music in Performance) will be interviewed to assess their preparedness for their desired track.
