for LGBTQ+ Students and Allies

High School Students (Grades 9-12) and Music Educators of All Grade Levels are Welcome!
Saturday, May 11th, 2019
Registration: HAS CHANGED TO 9:30am, Lobby of the Music Building
Festival: 10am – 6pm, Kendall Hall — Main Stage Theater
High School Student Registration Fee: $20 (Includes Choral Music, TCNJ Folder, and Festival T-Shirt)
Teacher Registration Fee: $12 
Casual Concert: 5pm – 6pm, Kendall Main Stage Theater
The Final Casual Concert is Free — Family and Friends are Welcome!
The Department of Music at The College of New Jersey is proud to present, THIS IS ME: A High School Choral Festival for LGBTQ+ Students and Allies. High School Students (in grades 9-12) of ALL gender and sexual identities, and teachers of all grade levels are welcome to attend this day of music making, workshops, professional development for teachers, and community building through events that focus on inclusivity, diversity, and celebrating identity through music and the arts.
With performances by Guest Artist and Keynote Speaker, Jason Forbach, of Broadway’s Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables!
High School Students in attendance will participate in morning and afternoon choral rehearsals with Dr. Nick McBride, Artistic Director of the “This is Me” Festival & Assistant Professor of Music Education at TCNJ, where you’ll prepare choral selections to be sung at the final 5pm Casual Concert; including an arrangement of our festival title song “This is Me.” In addition, student participants will be able to listen to and perform alongside TCNJ’s Music Majors in a shared performance with the TCNJ Chorale and College Choir, under the direction of Dr. John Leonard, TCNJ Director of Choral Activities, and with the TCNJ’s nationally recognized a cappella groups, “ITunes” and “Trentones.” Lastly, the festival will feature afternoon break-out sessions, workshops, and community time with fellow high school participants, TCNJ’s Music Students, Music Department Faculty, PRISM (TCNJ’s gender and sexuality alliance) and GLSEN (Gay and Lesbian Education Network).
  • Preparing for the College Voice Audition & Recommendations for LGBTQ+ Students in the Applied Voice Studio and Choral Rehearsal with Dr. Chris Sierra, TCNJ Voice Faculty
  • This Land (and Music) is Made for You and Me: Social Justice Music Education with Dr. Colleen Sears, TCNJ Music Education Faculty
  • Resources, Community Time, and Casual Conversation for LGBTQ+ High School Students, Led By Central New Jersey GLSEN (Gay and Lesbian Education Network)
  • Keynote speaker and guest artist, Broadway’s Jason Forbach
Music Educators in attendance will have the opportunity to collect professional development hours, attend workshops on creating an inclusive music classroom for LGBTQ+ students, explore the use of arts-based initiatives, repertoire, and curricula for promoting social justice in the music classroom, and observe and/or participate in the festival choral rehearsals alongside your students and TCNJ’s Choral Music faculty. In addition, we welcome (and encourage) you to join your students on the Main Stage of Kendall Hall Theater to sing in the final casual concert with the Festival High School Ensemble, TCNJ Choirs, and TCNJ’s a cappella groups, “ITunes” and “Trentones.”

  • The Importance of Fort Building in Music Education: Honoring students identities in the music classroom with Dr. Colleen Sears, TCNJ Music Education Faculty
  • Creating an Inclusive Classroom for LGBTQ+ Students, Led by Central New Jersey GLSEN (Gay and Lesbian Education Network)
  • Choral Rehearsal/Final Casual Performance Observation & Participation with your students, conducted by Dr. Nick McBride, TCNJ Music Education Faculty, and Dr. John Leonard, TCNJ Director of Choral Activities.

Registration is a 3-step process and is required to attend the festival:
1. Click the “Register Now” button below and complete the registration form.
2. After you submit the form, you will automatically be taken to TCNJ’s box office website to pay your registration fee via debit or credit card. You are NOT registered for the festival until you pay the registration fee.
3. Fill out the attached PDF Waiver form below and submit via email to, or bring a hard copy with you to the festival. YOU MUST SUBMIT THE WAIVER FORM IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FESTIVAL.

Lunch is not included — TCNJ Student Ambassadors will be present to guide High School Participants to on-campus dining. We recommend visiting the award-winning Atrium at Eickhoff or the many restaurants at CampusTown (including Panera, Starbucks, Piccolo Pronto, Mexican Mariachi Grill, and Yummy Sushi) located at the main entrance to TCNJ’s beautiful campus.
