The music performance minor is designed for matriculated BM in Music Education majors who demonstrate a record of exemplary music performance and the potential for post-baccalaureate growth and success in performance. Through this highly selective program, students will engage in rigorous, performance-focused music study beyond their BM in Music Education degree program to prepare them for professional performance opportunities and graduate-level music performance study.
Music education majors must apply during the same semester as their sophomore review and will complete a music-performance minor audition for a faculty committee. To be accepted into the music performance minor, applicants must demonstrate a performance level commensurate with a second-year performance major. In addition, to be eligible to apply for the minor, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 at the end of the sophomore year (or the semester sophomore review is completed), and have successfully completed select required core courses including, Musicianship III, Keyboard Skills II, Music from 1750-1945, and Introduction to Music Education.
The music performance minor requires a total of five course units, taken from the list below in consultation with the assigned Department of Music advisor. Students may begin working towards requirements in their first year (e.g., secondary ensembles), but cannot declare the minor until completion of a successful application/audition as outlined above.
