Audition Information
The goal of the music audition is to enable you to highlight your musical achievement and potential. You should select pieces from the repertoire list below that best demonstrate your current level of musicianship. We encourage you to consult with your music teacher and/or private lesson teacher when selecting and preparing your repertoire. Each audition will include scales, studies, solo repertoire, and sight-reading.
Scales
Prepare the scales listed below. All scales are to be played with a steady tempo, consistent rhythm. They should be played both ascending and descending, and in the required octaves (or full-range extension above/below the given tonic). All note should be tongued and non-staccato, using the rhythm below.
- A-Flat Major, two octaves
- E Major, two octaves
- B-Flat Major, two octaves
Studies
Choose one study from one of these etude books:
- H. Voxman, Selected Studies for Flute (Rubank publication)
- J. Andersen, 24 Studies for Flute, Opus 33
- H. Altès, 26 Selected Studies (Schirmer publication)
- L. Drouet, 25 Studies for Flute
- R. Cavally, Melodius and Progressive Studies, Any Volume
Solo Repertoire*
Select one piece listed below. Please be certain to prepare contrasting sections (slow/lyrical and fast/technical)
- J.S. Bach, Sonata #5 in E minor (movements 1 & 2)
- P. Hindemith, Flute Sonata (movements 1 &2)
- W.A. Mozart, Flute Concerto #1 in G (Movements 1 & 2)
- G. Faure, Fantasie
- J.S. Bach, Sonata #2 in Eb (Movements 1 & 2)
- Enesco, Cantabile & Presto
- An acceptable alternative is the current region/all-state audition repertoire.
