Audition Information
The goal of the music audition is to enable you to highlight your musical achievement and potential. You should select pieces from the repertoire list below that best demonstrate your current level of musicianship. We encourage you to consult with your music teacher and/or private lesson teacher when selecting and preparing your repertoire. Each audition will include scales, studies, solo repertoire, and sight-reading
Scales and Arpeggios
Prepare the scales listed below. All scales are to be played with a steady tempo, consistent rhythm, and in the required octaves
- Major and minor scales in 2 and 3 octaves and arpeggios (at least one in 3 octaves) (candidate’s choice)
Studies *
Prepare an etude of your choosing that best demonstrates your ability. Representative etudes from:
- R. Kreutzer, 42 Etudes
- F. Fiorillo, 36 Caprices op. 3
- JF Mazas, Etudes op. 36
- P. Rode, 24 Caprices op. 22
- J. Dont, 24 caprice op 35
- J. Dont, 24 Exercises op. 37
- N. Paganini, 24 Caprices
Solo Repertoire*
Choose two contrasting movements from a Concerto, Solo Sonata or Solo Piece. Selections can be from different pieces and don’t have to be complete movements if candidate’s piece of choice is more than five minutes long. The following is a sampling of pieces you might select, but is intended only as a guide:
- CA de Beriot – Violin Concerto No 9 (mvt. 1)
- F Kreisler – Preludium and Allegro
- WA Mozart Violin Concertos K 211, K 216, K 218, K219
- JS Bach – any movement from a Solo Sonata or Partita BWV 1001 – 1006
- E Bloch ‘Nigun’ from ‘Baal Shem’
- M Bruch – Violin Concerto in g minor
- F Mendelssohn – Violin Concerto in e minor
- H Wieniawski – Legende for Violin
