Horn

Audition Information

The goal of the audition is to enable you to best demonstrate your musical achievement. Select pieces from the repertoire below that you feel confident with and that display your strengths and interests.  We encourage you to consult with your music teacher or private lesson teacher when choosing and preparing your repertoire. We also invite you to contact s. Kathryn Mehrtens mehrtens@tcnj.edu, Artist-Teacher of Horn, for guidance in selecting repertoire and to inquire about scheduling a free sample lesson prior to your audition.

Scales

2 octave chromatic scale starting on low F, ascending and descending, slurred and with steady rhythm; 2 octave D major scale (starting on D one octave below the staff) and a 2 octave B-flat major scale (starting on Bb below middle C), ascending and descending, all notes tongued and non-staccato. All scales played with a steady tempo and consistent rhythm.

Solo

Saint-Saens: Morceau de Concert, the 2021 All-State/Region audition solo

Or

one movement from any one of the following
Mozart: Horn Concerto nos. 1, 2, 3, or 4
Beethoven: Horn Sonata, op. 17
Strauss: Concerto no.1
Saint-Saëns: Morceau de Concert

Sight Reading

The candidate may be asked to play a piece at sight.
